FAQ

What is Philadelphia Girls Choir?

Philadelphia Girls Choir is a fun and educational choral experience for girls and young women in the Greater Philadelphia area. PGC provides a comprehensive music education based off of the renowned Kodály Method. Nathan Wadley, music director of Philadelphia Girls Choir, teaches through the study of folk music and Classical works.

Does my child need voice training to audition?

Not at all! We welcome any girl to audition for us! Auditions are roughly 15 minutes in length. If you have music prepared, that's great! If not, that's fine too. Our Music Director, Nathan Wadley, will go over some simple excercises and songs in the audition.

What groups are there within the Choir?

Divided into three distinct groups, Philadelphia Girls Choir provides the best fit for any girl who participates. Our youngest group, Etude, focuses on the basics of music theory and performance. They also have a musical theme to guide them throughout the year.

Cantata, our intermediate group, continues their musical development with more challenging repertoire.  They also focus more on vocal technique.  Through local concerts and appearances, they develop confidence and learn what it means to be a performer.

Our most experienced group, Concerto, is the premier performing ensemble of the Philadelphia Girls Choir.  Rehearsals offer increasingly difficult and exciting repertoire. Musicianship exercises are taught and designed to fine tune both the ear and the voice.

What if my daughter is in another choir?

We try to be flexible with scheduling and attendance. Some of our members take part in another choir. In fact, we encourage attending multiple choirs! That being said, there is a commitment required for purposes of sound quality. If your daughter cannot make a large number of rehearsals, this may not be the right activity for her. We need to be able to work with the girls continuously.

How much will this cost? Are there scholarships available?

Tuition for Philadelphia Girls Choir is $575 per semester. There are full and partial need-based scholarships available.

How do I get uniforms?

Uniforms can be obtained online and information will be provided upon acceptance. Dresses will need to be fitted.

Are there performance and travelling opportunities?

Performances include opportunities to sing at high-level engagements locally and regionally. On our first European Tour in the summer of 2014, we will give concerts in Prague, Kraków, and Vienna.

Anything else I should know?

With all this learning and performing, there is still time for fun! Field trips and museum visits round out the girls’ experience by linking pieces music with the art, architecture, and history of its time. The girls gain a deeper understanding of what they are singing and the cultural relevance it has.

Music opens a window to the beauty of the world.
At Philadelphia Girls Choir, we see music as the central piece in a cultural jigsaw puzzle. Through music, we gain a deeper understanding of ourselves, our community and our world.

Philadelphia Girls Choir is an after-school music education program for girls 7 and older. Girls audition and are placed in one of the training programs based on proficiency and age. After the training programs, selected singers are asked to audition for the performing choir. All programs include public performances, some programs include summer camps abroad.
